Financial records of the Alabama Hospitals in Richmond, Va., 1861-1864.

This series functions to document the accountability of the Alabama hospitals in Richmond, Va. Most of the series consists of vouchers to the Auditor, primarily from Juliet Opie Hopkins, though J.B. Stinson, William Haywood Lawrence, and George L. Watson who as stewards purchased many supplies of the First Alabama Hospital, and J.S. Burs, Jr. and H.J. Sharit who as stewards purchased many supplies for the Second Alabama Hospital. Thomas Bradford, who as steward of the Third Alabama Hospital did the same. These vouchers detail individual transactions to purchase supplies and equipment for the hospitals. Some of the more common trading partners in Richmond included John T. Gray, druggist and apothecary; Oscar Kranz, wine and liquor dealer; Charles D. Yale and Co., George Starrett, stoves, ranges, and furnaces; Exchange Hotel; D.A. McMinn, furnishings; Burton and Greenhow, grocers; William White, William Collingsworth, Eliza M. Duval, James Hill, E.A. Latham, and John C. Knauff, grocer. The stewards of these Alabama hospitals kept accounts current sheets, most of them for a week or a month at a time, and these remain with the vouchers. Also among the vouchers are the receipts of funds dispensed by the State of Alabama via Judge Arthur F. Hopkins, and receipts from hospital employees for their wages. There are also a few accounts current of the hospitals as a whole with the State of Alabama as verified by the State Auditor, John A. Graham. The accounts current detail donations made to the hospitals as well as expenditures. There is a typed transcript of the accounts current covering the period 1861 June 1 to Nov. 4. There is a folder of authorizations and appointments made by Arthur F. Hopkins for various reasons, including authorizing John D. Phelan and later John B. Taylor of Montgomery to act as attorney for the hospital in order to get funds from the State of Alabama for the hospital.
